The Problem with Credit Report Errors

Did you know? According to a Federal Trade Commission study, 1 in 4 Americans have errors on their credit reports. Even worse, about 1 in 5 of those errors are serious enough to affect your credit score and borrowing costs.

At AIM Credit Repair in Hugo, Minnesota, we review hundreds of credit reports every month from Minnesota residents. Here are the five most common errors we find—and how to spot them on your own report.

---

Error #1: Someone Else's Accounts on Your Report

This is identity theft's calling card. You'll see credit accounts, loans, or collections that have absolutely nothing to do with you.

How to spot it: Review your credit report carefully. If you see an account you never opened, that's red flag #1.

Why it happens: Name confusion, data entry errors, or actual identity theft.

What to do: Dispute it immediately with the credit bureau and contact the creditor directly.

---

Error #2: Duplicate Accounts (Same Debt Listed Twice)

Imagine paying off your car loan, and suddenly seeing TWO car loans on your credit report. Sound crazy? We see this regularly.

How to spot it: Look for the same loan or credit card listed multiple times with the same balance, payment history, and creditor.

Why it happens: Reporting errors, merged accounts, or system glitches when accounts transfer between lenders.

What to do: Dispute the duplicate account. Usually, the bureau removes one within 30 days.

---

Error #3: Incorrect Payment Status (Showing Late When You Paid On Time)

This is devastating. Your payment was on time. You have proof. But your credit report says you were late.

How to spot it: Compare your bank records or creditor statements to what's on your credit report. Look at the payment status column.

Why it happens: Creditors don't always report accurately. Mail delays, system errors, or creditor mistakes cause this frequently.

What to do: Send a dispute letter with proof of payment (bank statement, cancelled check, creditor confirmation). Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the bureau must investigate within 30 days.

---

Error #4: Old Information That Should Be Removed

Most negative items should fall off your credit report after 7 years from the date of first delinquency. But many bureaus don't remove them automatically.

How to spot it: Check the dates on negative items. If an account went bad in 2016, it should be gone by 2023.

Why it happens: The credit bureaus aren't always diligent about removing old data.

What to do: Dispute it. The bureau must verify the account is still reportable. If it's past 7 years, they should remove it.

---

Error #5: Identity Theft Accounts

Beyond someone else's legitimate account, identity thieves open NEW accounts in your name.

How to spot it: Look for recent accounts you absolutely did not open. Check opening dates carefully.

Why it happens: Identity theft. Someone has your information and is using it.

What to do: This requires more action:

1. Place a fraud alert on your credit file (call any bureau)

2. Freeze your credit (free in Minnesota)

3. File a report at IdentityTheft.gov

4. File a police report

5. Dispute the fraudulent accounts

How to Check YOUR Credit Report for Errors

You're entitled to one free credit report from each of the three major bureaus every 12 months.

Go to: AnnualCreditReport.com (this is the official, government-authorized site)

Get reports from all three:

- Equifax

- Experian

- TransUnion

Why all three? Not all creditors report to all three bureaus. You might find an error on one report but not the others.

---

What to Do If You Find an Error

1. Document it. Take screenshots or print the error.

2. Write a dispute letter. Be specific about which information is wrong.

3. Send via certified mail. You need proof of delivery.

4. Include supporting documents. Bank statements, payment receipts, etc.

5. Send to the credit bureau AND the creditor. Both must respond.

6. Wait 30-45 days. The bureau has 30 days to investigate under federal law.

7. Follow up. Check your report to confirm the correction.
